Utrecht from Amsterdam: Canals, Wharf Cellars and the Dom Tower

While Amsterdam is defined by its 17th-century Golden Age architecture, Utrecht's history reaches much deeper into the Middle Ages. The city centre is dominated by the Dom Tower and a network of canals that are unlike any others in the world. Getting there: Amsterdam to Utrecht

Utrecht is incredibly easy to reach from Amsterdam. Intercity trains run from Amsterdam Centraal to Utrecht Centraal every 10 to 15 minutes throughout the day.

Utrecht's canals, specifically the Oudegracht (Old Canal) and Nieuwegracht (New Canal), are unique. They feature 'werven'—wharf cellars located at the water level, below the street. These were originally used for unloading goods directly into warehouses.

Today, these cellars have been converted into cafes, restaurants, and shops. Walking along the lower wharf level provides a peaceful, intimate perspective of the city that you won't find in other Amsterdam neighbourhoods.

Museum Speelklok

Often cited as one of the most cheerful museums in Europe, Museum Speelklok houses a vast collection of self-playing musical instruments. From tiny 18th-century music boxes to massive, thunderous street organs, the museum is interactive and surprisingly engaging for all ages. Entry is around €15–16.

Centraal Museum and Miffy

Art lovers should visit the Centraal Museum, which houses the world's largest Rietveld collection (including the famous Red and Blue Chair) and works by the Utrecht Caravaggists. It is also the home of Miffy (Nijntje), created by Utrecht native Dick Bruna; the dedicated Miffy Museum is located just across the street and is a must for families.

Is Utrecht worth the trip?

Utrecht is well worth a visit, especially if you have more than three days in the Netherlands. It feels less like a tourist destination and more like a vibrant university city. It is closer and more traditional than Rotterdam, and offers a more relaxed atmosphere than the Amsterdam centre.
